Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with four kids
Location: Shelburne, Vermont
Size: 353 square feet (33 square meters)
Designers: Jillian Bartolo of Peregrine Design Build (lead designer) and Lauren Miles (interior design)
Bartolo removed a structural wall to absorb the former dining room into the new kitchen, increasing the layout by 155 square feet. “We ended up relocating the dining room across the house,” says Bartolo, who worked with Miles on selecting finishes.
A 4½ -by-10-foot island with a flat-sawn white oak countertop creates a warm and welcoming spot for the family to gather. “It was my recommendation to go with a 2-inch-thick top that’s dramatic and creates a focal point,” Bartolo says. “For the scale of the island that big, the thickness is appropriate.”
Custom Shaker-style wood cabinetry is painted a warm green (Shade-Grown by Sherwin-Williams). A 36-inch paneled built-in refrigerator column and 30-inch paneled freezer (back right) and paneled dishwasher to the left of the sink help maintain the warm and inviting look. The wood-and-green palette join engineered wide-plank European white oak flooring, hand-painted marble backsplash tiles and marble perimeter countertops for an inviting English country look and feel.
A pocket door next to the refrigerator leads to the renovated mudroom, which has slate tile flooring. To the right of that doorway, on the white wall, is another pocket door (not shown) that opens to a spacious butler’s pantry.

The island has seating for five and storage on two sides. The cabinets in front of the stools hold seasonal items. Two 16-inch pendant lights with an aged brass finish and linen drum shades hang above the island. Single-arm library lights with a hand-rubbed antique brass finish provide task lighting over the sink. (The kitchen also has recessed LED ceiling lights, which were digitally removed in some of these photos by the photographer to help highlight other design details.)

The white apron-front fireclay sink pairs with a modern-meets-traditional bridge faucet in a satin bronze finish. A drip ledge below the sink helps protect “the cabinet below that often sees a lot of wear without it,” Bartolo says. “It is also a beautiful detail for aesthetics.” A paneled trash and recycling pullout sits to the right of the sink.
This view shows a bit more of the honed Vermont Danby marble countertops, which have soft gray and gold veins on a soft white background. “The attraction is that it’s a local material and the beauty and quality of the marble with warm veins,” Bartolo says. “It was the starting point of the whole kitchen. The client also liked how the warmth of the wood on the island offset the stone here.” Casement windows offer fresh air and beautiful views of the family’s lush backyard with pool.

Glass-front upper cabinets flank the windows and help break up the expanse of cabinetry. “We didn’t want the green to be overpowering,” Bartolo says. “It also allows the client to show off her beautiful china.” Satin brass latches add an old-world detail.
A custom millwork hood blends with the surrounding cabinetry and conceals a powerful ventilation fan. The pro-style 48-inch gas range with an infrared charbroiler and large-capacity convection oven allows the couple to cook for big groups. The interior side of the island includes tons of storage, including a warming drawer.

12 Clever Kitchen Cabinet Storage Ideas
A built-in wood hutch with a large upper cabinet and soft-close drawers stands across from the sink. “It was intentionally designed with unique details to give it a furniture quality,” Bartolo says. The door partially seen to the right of the hutch leads to the upgraded basement with indoor soccer turf.
The new butler’s pantry includes a sink, a dishwasher, a 30-inch speed oven and homework areas for the kids. “They wanted to have that additional storage,” Bartolo says. “Since they like to entertain, they wanted a space where they could hide the mess.”
